We asked trail-running superstars AJ Calitz and Lucky Miya to list their top five trail runs in South Africa.
1. The Dragon’s Back in the Drakensberg
A three-metre wide ridgeline with sheer drops on either side. It’s one of the scariest places you’ll ever run…especially if the wind is blowing.
2. The Otter Trail
Its nickname as the ‘Grail of Trail’ is well-earned. With almost 3000m of vertical ascent and the infamous Bloukrans River mouth crossing, it’s a relentlessly technical race.
3. The K-Way Three Peaks Challenge
Doing Devil’s Peak, Table Mountain and Lion’s Head in one day is an epic challenge. If you can’t handle all three just start small.
4. The Num-Num Trail in Mpumalanga
This has a bit of everything: easy escarpment running, great views, steep climbs, twisty forest sections, ladders, bridges and waterfalls.
5. The trails around Strandfontein in Namqualand
These aren’t nearly as challenging as the others on this list, but in the flower season they’re spectacularly beautiful.
