Cape Union Mart Fabric Face Masks

How they help to reduce the risk of spreading viruses

Fabric face masks are recommended for the general public to significantly reduce the wearer’s risk of spreading viruses, in addition to handwashing and social distancing. These are general-use fabric face masks and not intended for medical use. They are not proven to eliminate the transmission of viruses, but according to The World Health Organization do assist in preventing transmission.

How to use them

When handling the mask, only touch the ear loops and avoid touching the fabric and/or D15 Filter. Fidgeting with the mask repeatedly is strongly discouraged, as it is important to avoid touching the face.

How they work

Our masks are tested in conjunction with a leading university. They are designed to cover your face from nose-to-chin and fasten by means of elasticated ear loops for maximum comfort. Please note that both the MB1 and Softshell facemasks feature adjustable ear loops.

Each mask consists of three layers, including a D15 Filter that has been specially developed for public use.

D15 Filter

The 3-layer D15 filter has been specially developed and manufactured in South Africa for use in face masks for the general population. It works by entrapping 95% of micro particles above 5μm (microns) to help in the fight against viruses. Each filter may be sterilised 5x times before discarding.

How to Clean Masks

Please refer to our special guide below for specific instructions on how to clean and sterilise masks both before and after use.

Wash Care BEFORE Use

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before removing a mask and D15 Filter from this box. Make sure there are no obvious tears or holes in both masks and D15 Filters.
  2. ALL new masks and D15 Filters MUST be sterilised before you can wear them by soaking it in boiling water from the kettle for 5 min. Ensure mask and D15 Filter are completely air-dried before use.
  3. Wash hands again as per Step 1. Pick up and insert D15 Filter into the front pocket of mask as per illustration below.
  4. Hold the mask by the ear loops ONLY and place a loop around each ear.
  5. Ensure the mask comfortably covers the nose and mouth, with no gaps between your face and the mask.

Wash Care AFTER Use

  1. Remove mask carefully from your face by using the straps only and not touching the mask.
  2. Place complete unit (mask and D15 filter) in a bowl and pour boiling water from a kettle over it, making sure it is fully covered with boiling water for at least 5 minutes.
  3. Wash hands and face using standard protocols.
  4. Rinse the complete unit under clean, cold running water.
  5. Remove the D15 filter and leave aside to completely air-dry in a sterilized area.
  6. If the mask has dirty marks on it, you can hand or machine wash the mask with detergent. (Make sure the D15 filter is removed before hand or machine washing and do not squeeze, wring or hand-wash the D15 filter, as the delicate structure may be damaged.)
  7. Leave both D15 filter and mask to air-dry. Once both components are dry, insert D15 filter back into mask and it is ready to be worn again.

PLEASE NOTE: D15 filters can only be sterilised and used 5 times. Discard D15 filter after 5th use and be sure to sterilise and dry before safely discarding the D15 filter in the trash.

Safety Tips

It is, important to observe basic rules when using these fabric face masks to ensure that they are used optimally:

  • The face mask must cover the nose and mouth completely.
  • Face masks should not be lowered when speaking, coughing or sneezing.
  • The inner side of the mask should, under no circumstances, be touched by hands, not even when sterilising and disposing of mask and/or filter.
  • Change your fabric face mask if it is wet or visibly soiled.
  • Never share your used masks and/or D15 filters with anyone, not even after washing and sterilising the items.

Elastic Ear Loop Shortening Guide

(Applies to the K-Way MB1 Fabric Face Mask 3-Pack with Filter)

Our goal was to produce an affordable, reusable mask in the time we had available to supply the general public with this necessary safety measure. As a result, we decided to take a one-size-fi¬ts-all approach to the length of the elastic ear-loops.

Luckily, effectively shortening the elastic ear-loop is much easier than lengthening it. This guide provides multiple options in which you can shorten the length of the elastic, but it is by no means a completely exhaustive one. Please feel free to experiment and share your methods with us by posting your creative solutions on our Facebook or Instagram page.
