Cape Union Mart’s Adventure Film Challenge invites enthusiasts to submit their 5 minute films on South African outdoor culture by the end of July for this annual competition.

The winning professional category submission will be screened in South Africa in connection with the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour 2022, and the winning film-maker will receive a R10 000 cash prize and K-Way gear to the value of R5000. In proud partnership with DJI, the winning film will also receive a DJI Mini SE Fly More Combo – which includes a DJI Mini SE drone and additional accessories.

The winning aspiring category submission will win a R5000 gift voucher.

What is the Adventure Film Challenge?

The Adventure Film Challenge was founded by Cape Union Mart to showcase the best adventure films South Africa had to offer and help to shine a spotlight on, and to encourage aspiring and established film makers to gear up and explore our natural landscapes.


What is the Prize?

The professional film every year will win R10 000 in cash and R5 000 in vouchers while aspiring filmmakers are vying for R5 000 worth of gear. The winning films will also have opportunity to be featured in the BANFF Centre Film Festival screened in South Africa.


What should the film be about?

The clue is in the name! Send us a film capturing your most epic adventure in the outdoors.

How long should the film be?

It should be no longer than 300 seconds (5 minutes).


What should the resolution be?

In order to be suitable for cinemas it should preferably be shot at HDTV resolution (1920 x 1080) at either 25 or 50 fps.


How do you enter?

Upload your video to Youtube and send us your name, contact details and a link to your video.


When is the submission date?

Please submit your films by 12:00, Tuesday 31 July 2022

Who will select the winner?

The winner is selected by an external panel of judges who are involved in the outdoor film scene in South Africa.


What criteria will you be judged on?

  • Storyline / subject choice
  • Creativity and originality
  • Visual composition/ cinematography / technical execution
  • Editing / sound and music
  • Overall impression

Terms & Conditions

  • Submissions must be no longer than 300 seconds.
  • Submissions on YouTube must be made in high definition.
  • Add the link, title of your film and your name in your submission.
  • Films must be shot in a way that they can be shown in public. In submitting a film the applicant acknowledges that he/she is the owner of the content and has the rights to distribute it in all of its parts.
  • The applicant acknowledges that all characters have given their consent to appear in the submission.
  • The applicant acknowledges they have the rights to all music within the submission.
  • The applicant give Cape Union Mart to use their submission at no charge in the BANFF Centre Mountain Film Festival in South Africa.
  • The applicant remains the owner of the content & Cape Union Mart will not sell or distribute the submission, the filmmaker will be credited when the submission is used.
  • Films must be shot in HD resolution at either 25 or 50 fps.
  • The winning filmmaker will be contacted directly.
  • The winner must make the best quality version of their submission available to Cape Union Mart.
  • Prize money will be deposited into the winners account.
  • Entries close 12:00 on Tuesday, 31 July 2022
