Take a Gap Year

If you are looking for respite from education, or considering a break from your career, then maybe a gap-year is just the thing you need. Taking a year off to travel the world is probably the biggest adventure you will ever have, and an experience you will never forget.

So if you’re serious about leaving your comfort zone, check out these pointers to get you started. Cape Union Mart… Explore.

What you need to know

1. Choose your own adventure

The best place to start is always by choosing where you want to go, and what you want to do. Do you want to travel in Europe, Asia, or the Americas? Do you want to au pair, or learn a new skill? Do you want to spend your free time travelling, or learning how to snowboard? Ask yourself these questions, and head to step 2.

2. Bring in the professionals

Some countries are incredibly strict on who they allow within their borders e.g. America, and much paperwork is frequently required to gain permission. There are several companies who specialise in gap-year adventures, and their assistance will make your life infinitely easier. Cape Union Mart trusts and recommends Chilli Adventures – an independent, South African adventure company operating in Joburg, Cape Town and Durban.

3. Plan ahead

The secret to a successful gap year is planning. Get the big issues out the way first – have I booked my plane ticket, do I have a job opportunity, when will I get my visa? As with all travel, the later you leave things the more expensive and stressful life becomes. Visas take time for approval, flights rise in price, and the best jobs disappear first.

4. Preparing your gear

If you are planning on travelling during your gap year, it is important that you remain as mobile as possible. You do not want to walk around the streets of Rome with a gigantic suitcase on wheels. Pack light, take only what you need, and don’t forget the essentials. Download our recommended gear checklist!

5. Travel insurance

Travel insurance is an absolute must. Health care in other countries is frequently far more expensive than South Africa, and an illness or accident can deal a serious blow to your finances. Chat to your gap-year operator about exactly what your travel insurance policy covers. Better safe than sorry.
