At a majestic 5895 metres, Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. It is also one of the highest “walkable” mountains in the world. Every year, hundreds of South Africans travel to Tanzania in the hope of summitting, all with varying degrees of success.
Cape Union Mart prides itself in stocking everything one needs to climb the “roof of Africa.” In conjunction with Wild Frontiers, Cape Union Mart has completed 5 staff expeditions to the mountain, firmly believing that the best advice stems from first-hand experience.
Imagine watching sunrise from the highest point on the African continent...
Let us show you how.
1. Find a good tour operator
You can only climb Kilimanjaro as part of an organised trek, so find yourself an operator. There are many to choose from – some professional and others not. Cape Union Mart has partnered with Wild Frontiers, and recommends them without reserve. They are extremely experienced, and operate in an ethical manner. Check out their website for more details.
2. Book in advance
The best weather for climbing Kili normally occurs between the months of January to February, and June to September. Good weather translates into a far more enjoyable climb, and a greater chance of summiting.
3. Fitness levels
Many people are put off climbing mountains like Kilimanjaro because they are "not a serious hiker.” One of the best things about Kili is that you need not be Edmund Hillary to summit! With Kilimanjaro virtually in our backyard, there is no excuse not to give it a bash. Check out Cape Union Mart’s advice on getting fit.
4. Walking at altitude
Walking at altitude will affect your ability to successfully summit Kilimanjaro. The more acclimatised you are the better. The average length of a Kilimanjaro expedition is 5 days. Cape Union Mart recommends doing it in 6.
5. Final words
With the proper equipment, tour operator, and preparation, your chances of successfully summiting Mount Kilimanjaro are extremely high. However, you must never make the mistake of underestimating the mountain. Cape Union Mart stocks the best in Kilimanjaro gear. Wild Frontiers has a success rate of about 97%. Both will ensure that summiting Kili is one of the most memorable experiences of your life.
